Description | A report on an excavation of pre-historic lake dwellings carried out at Barmston in 1960. |
Abstract | The Holderness crannogs were first discovered in 1880 by workmen cleaning out the Skipsea branch of the Barmston Drain in a field known as West Furze west of Ulrome. This work attracted the attention of R A Smith of the British Museum, who published a paper on the 'Lake-Dwellings in Holderness' in 1911. He referred to three other sites at Barff Hill, Brunton Hill and at the outfall of Barmston Drain. The Barmston excavation shows there are Bronze Age settlements in Holderness. |
