Abstract | Paper seeks to explore the history of the nunneries in an area of Yorkshire famous for its monastic establishments in the period between their inception in c.1125 and c.1300. Attention is focussed on evidence for the chronology of the foundations, the growth of estate and economic management, the nature of patronage and for the history of the nunneries in their era of consolidation c.1200-c.1300. |
