TitleRoute 1 in Roman Britain: from the frontier to the Humber
Date2007
DescriptionRelates to the Roman road from the military base at Brough on Humber to Hadrian's Wall.
AbstractThe itinerary of Antoninus Augustus lists 15 routes in Britain. Route 1 ran from a place called Praetorium (praetor's headquarters) at the Roman military base at Brough on Humber through Yorkshire, Durham and Northumberland to Hadrian's Wall. This article uses the evidence of ancient toponyms, modern river names and the archaeological evidence for the date of towns/forts. It is argued that the route links important centres of population and argues that this was the main road running through the newly constituted York province in the years after A.D. 212-17 and on into the 4th century.
