DescriptionObituary of William Hammond Bartholomew 1831-1919, aged 89 years, the mainspring of the Aire and Calder Navigation. He was Engineer to the Aire and Calder company and the inventor of 'Tom puddings', the almost square steel compartment boats used on the Aire and Calder Navigations. They were first operated for the bulk transport of coal in 1865. They are hauled in trains by power-boats, formerly steam tugs but later diesels, rounded at bow and stern. His invention brought new life to the port of Goole, which he helped to make an important outlet for the Yorkshire coalfields. He was a benefactor of the Goole Bartholomew Hospital.
