He was able to see Mount Everest and the rest of the Himalayas: 'I wonder if you can visualise what it was like at sunrise. First of all the snowy peak would be dark, then it would be violet gradually becoming a marvellous pink, which would slowly die away leaving the peaks standing white & clean in the morning sun'.
