Description | Includes: Affidavit of Dale Brown, Kingston upon Hull, commodore of the pilots, that he sailed on the barque 'Atwick' belonging to the port of Bridlington during 1829-1831 as second mate and chief mate. In Dec 1830 he sailed on the vessel from London to the East Indies along with George Stockell of Bridlington, mariner, in the capacity of apprentice. In Aug 1831 the ship reached Sincapore [Singapore] and George Stockell became unwell and was taken to the hospital where he died of fever about the 9 Aug 1831. Dated 6 Feb 1851.
Affidavit of George Agars, Bridlington, gentleman, that William Stockell of Bridlington, attorney at law, deceased, married his sister and had 4 sons and 5 daughters before his death in Dec 1827. His wife predeceased him. William Agars Stockell, the eldest son, left his father's house on 9 Sep 1824 and has not been seen since. George Stockell, the second son, died at Sincapore [Singapore] in the East Indies in 1830. Robert Stockell, the third son, sailed from Newcastle upon Tyne in Nov 1838 on a vessel bound for Oporto and has not been heard of since. James Stockell, the fourth son, resides in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, printer and bookseller, and is unmarried. Dated 25 May 1840.
Affidavit of Thomas Herbert, Scarborough, North Riding, ship owner, that in 1838 he was part owner with James Bentley of London and William Coverley of Sherburn, of the ship 'Unanimity' of the port of Scarborough. He remembers that Stockell was a native of Bridlington. About the 20 Nov 1838 the ship was laden with coal and sailed from South Shields to Oporto. Dated 10 Feb 1851.
Affidavit of Mary Stockell, High Street, Bridlington, daughter of the late William Stockell, that her eldest brother William Agars Stockell left their father's house in 1824 and is supposed to be dead. George Stockell, a mariner, died in Sincapore [Singapore] in 1831. Robert Stockell, mariner, sailed on the ship 'Unamimity' which never reached the destination of Oporto. James Stockell, living in High Street, Bridlington, is her only surviving brother. Dated 28 Jun 1851. |
