AdminHistory | Bursea chapel was designed by the famous 'Gothic Revival' architect, William Butterfield, in 1867. Butterfield is known for his design of All Saints Church, Margaret Street, London, St Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne, Australia, and Keble College, Oxford, amongst others. Bursea chapel was built by Henry Kessell, Bridge Street, Goole, as a memorial to the wife of Thomas Sotheron-Estcourt (Home Secretary 1859) and it cost £350. Mrs Escourt had taken a great interest in the building of the chapel but died before its completion and so it became her memorial. It was opened on 6 Aug 1872 but was not consecrated or officially attached to the Parish Church. The chapel is of the 'Early English' style in brick with stone facings and a bell tower at the west end. Its seating capacity is around 100. Above the chapel entrance is a mosaic depicting the two monks with the pilgrims. This was designed by Muriel Halkon, local school teacher and wife of farmer Bill Halkon of Hasholme Hall. The work was carried out by parishioners. In September 2006, the chapel was rededicated after extensive restoration work.
