TitleJOURNAL OF NELLIE CROSSLEY, BRIDLINGTON, SPINSTER, AND JAMES TATE, HARROGATE, GROCER
Date1906-2008
DescriptionContains pocket journal used by husband and wife, James Tate and Nellie Crossley, to record household expenses and notes on Christianity 1906-1909, and 'Journal of an Anonymous Yorkshire-Man' research notes on the book 2008.
AdminHistoryNellie Crossley and James Tate were married at Bridlington Holy Trinity Church on 21 April 1906. At the time of their marriage Nellie and James were both aged 24 years. Nellie, whose full name was Ellen, resided at 55 The Promenade, Bridlington Quay, while James lived at 3 Strawberry Dale, Harrogate, and traded as a grocer. It is not known where the couple settled after marriage, but as there is no evidence of James Tate having worked as a grocer in Bridlington, it seems likely that they began married life in Harrogate. Nellie, the daughter of a schoolmaster John William Crossley, appears to have been a devout Christian as shown by her notes relating to Christianity in the journal. James, the son of a farmer Alfred William Crossley, may have compiled notes on household expenses in order to keep a check on his finances as he started life as a newly married man about to start a family.
