AdminHistoryThe Cholmley estates were succeeded to by Sir George Strickland, son of William Strickland and Henrietta Cholmley, in 1865. Henrietta was an heiress of Nathaniel Cholmley of Whitby and Howsham, and in order for her son George Strickland to inherit these estates he was required to assume the surname Cholmley. Thus he became known as Sir George (Strickland) Cholmley.
