The author left from the port of Liverpool on 14 Mar and arrived in Halifax in Canada on [20 Jun] with the intention of travelling from there to Edmonton. The author also refers to 'Harry' as a travelling companion.

The diary describes daily life on board ship as a passenger travelling 3rd class. He describes the daily routine, food eaten, sea sickness, how passengers amused themselves and descriptions of passengers, especially 'foreigners'.
