TitleLetter to John Grimston at Kilnwick from Digby Legard at Ganton
Date15 Sep 1757
DescriptionIncludes references to Charles having just brought Grimston's letter; having intended to write by Mrs Cartwright's servant; tumultuous riots, which Legard has escaped better than his neighbours, no mob having assembled about the house; the constables having been threatened and intimidated from giving in their lists of men; Sir Geo[rge] and Mr Robinson having met at Brumpton on Sessions bus[y]ness and intended to have the lists given in then but an assembly of 2 or 300 peasants, many armed with guns and Pitchforks, prevented it by seizing the Constables, taking away their lists and tearing the clo[a]thes off their backs; Mr Robisnon having had a wig thrown in his face after it had been dragged through the kennel; the women setting the bells ringing; and the men, many of who wore Cockades, huzzaad; the tumult at last being appeased by giving them money; a meeting at Hunmanby a numerous body surrounded the squire's house, broke all his windows and obliged him to escape by private roads to Hutt[on] Bush[ell]; Mrs Cartwright supposed to have gone to Birdsall but a messenger having arrived early to let them know that Mr and Mrs Willoughbyleft their house at 5 that morning, she to go to York and he to Lord Erwins and that the previous day they had been beseiged by a thousand armed mob, who kept firing guns but not having done any damage; being glad that Mrs Grimston had not suffered by the fright; it looking like rebellion; thinking that the gentlemen were too complaisant giving them money and liquor, it being a kind of encouragement and the disorders will require a violent remedy; wondering at Mr Chomley's sudden match and presuming it is the eldest; pitying their friend Henry, who deserves a better fate; having five servants who were ill of fevers, though J[t] powder has recovered some; expecting Barny; Mrs Creyk being with them; expecting the Thornhills tomorrow to dinner; lottery tickets and being in want of a husbandman, remembering Tho[ma]s Sigston having recommended his son as honest and industrious and asking to be informed if he is otherwise engaged from Mich[ela]s next and if Grimston could recommend him
