Title
Letter to John Grimston at Kilnwick to be left at the Tyger In Beverley from N Maister at Hull
Date
16 Dec 1755
Description
Includes references to groceries having arrived and been sent to Beverley by Tods Waggon; not suffering from the dreadful affair at Lisbon nor having no connexions with those who are so; accounts from there being dismall and nothing of value except for plate and money will be recovered; woolen goods which they had had in vast quantities in Lisbon being spoilt, the loss of which will fall heavily on the Gentlemen at Leeds, Wakefield and Halifax; some computing the loss to the English from 2 to 4 millions; expecting that some Portuguese will deny debts that they owe or become Bankrupt even though they have wherewithall to pay creditors; hoping that the Cocks in Grimston's neighbourhood gave him good sport and Mrs Maister having been confined to bed with a violent Erysipelas with a vast inflamation in one of her legs
