Description | Plaint that on 18 Jan 1704/1705 at Barmby upon Dunn James Thwaytes, late of Doncaster, innkeeper, did say in a loud voice 'Jonathan Bates is a very great rogue and a rascal and a villain, he will set the town on fire, he will fire my house and I will have him sent away for a soldier like a villain as he is' and twice repeated the remarks with variations. Bates claimed damages of £100 and the case was heard before the Justices in Assize on 21 Jul at York Castle. The court found the case partly proved and awarded damages of 40s |
