TitleBundle of papers respecting Lady Lumley's charities
Date1814-c.1823
DescriptionIn 1657 Lady Lumley appointed lands at Thornton to build a hospital for twelve poor people, a chapel and a schoolhouse. Eventually the children who attended came from households earning under £10 per annum. The legal papers appear to relate to the issue of whether the school was intended to be a grammar school and teach Greek and Latin in addition to English. Rev Thomas Cutler Rudston-Read was one of the trustees of this charity.
