Charles Russell Ingham was born on 17 March 1898 at Dalton Holme and was baptized at the parish church on 15 May of the same year. He was the younger son of Charles Hartley and Ann Eliza Ingham (nee Sayers). His father was a land agent on the Dalton Estate.

In 1911 Charles won a scholarship to attend North Eastern County School a boarding school at Barnard Castle. The scholarship was for three years. In 1915 Charles trained to be a surveyor at Dalton estate office. He enlisted with the 4th Battalion of the East Yorkshire regiment in November 1916 and was appointed Second lieutenant in April 1917. After going to the Front he was invalided home with trench fever and then rejoined the Battalion in November 1917. On 22 March 1918 Charles was captured at during the Battle of St Quentin at Harcourt and was interred at Karlsruhe prison of war. He was repatriated on 28 December 1918. At the end of the war he was awarded the Victory and British medals.

After the war Charles worked for the Huntroyd estate at Burnley Lancashire. He married Dorothy Holden on 2 September 19130 at St Mary’s church Mosley, Birmingham. They had three children.

In 1939 Charles was a chartered surveyor and land agent and the family were living at Huntroyde, Burnley. Charles became a prominent county councilor and was respected for his views on tree management.

Charles died at Sheffield on 5 July 1960.
