Cyril Stamford Ireland was born in Lockington in 1892 and baptized there on 27 Mar 1892. He was one of four children of Charles and Emily Ireland. His father was the postmaster at Lockington. Cyril worked as a gardener for the County Council before the war.

He enlisted with the Royal Field Artillery serving as a gunner with No 1 Depot and was a Farrier Corporal. Cyril did not serve in France as he sadly died on 5 Mar 1916 in the Northern General Hospital in Newcastle of acute pneumonia as a result of Spanish flu, a disease which was to become a worldwide epidemic. Cyril was buried at St Mary’s Church, Lockington on 8 Mar 1916.
