Born in 1890 in Scotswood, Northumberland, Frank Hymers was the middle child of Robert Hymers, a joiner, and his wife Hannah. The family lived at various addresses in Northumberland and County Durham. In 1911 they were living in Ryton-on-Tyne, Durham, Frank was working as a miner putter.
Frank enlisted on 26 Aug 1914 and joined the West Yorkshire Regiment. The regiment was in Egypt from Aug 1915 until Jul 1916. He was then sent to France where he was wounded in action suffering a gunshot wound to his right hand. He was in a Military Hospital in Nottingham for treatment followed by a period in a Convalescent Hospital in Blackpool from Oct 1916 to Mar 1917. Frank married Margaret Auton in Nottingham following his discharge from the Convalescent Hospital. Margaret lived in Beverley until his demobilisation. Frank rejoined his regiment in France in Jul 1917 and was wounded a second time suffering a fractured left arm. He was treated in England returning to France in Mar 1918 and was transferred to the York and Lancaster Regiment the following month.
Private Hymers was discharged from the Army on 4 Feb 1919 and was awarded the British War Medal, the Victory Medal and the Silver Star. His Dispersal Certificate gives his specialist military qualification as Rifleman and his civil trade as road maker. He and Margaret returned to his mother's address in Newcastle-upon-Tyne on his discharge. He died in 1972 in Newcastle.
