Fred was born in Beverley on 22 Apr 1878 and was baptised on 4 Jun 1878 in Beverley Minster, his parents were Joseph Winslow and Mary Hancock, Joseph was a general labourer.
Fred married Elizabeth Ann Lowe on 24 Apr 1900 and they lived off Holme Church Lane. He was employed as a coal hawker but by 1911 he was a gas stoker at the local gas works and living at Ash Tree Grove, off Holme Church Lane. They had two children, Doris Emily born 1904 and Fred born 1910.
Fred entered the war on 10 Nov 1915 in the East Riding of Yorkshire Imperial Yeomanry and later joined the Machine Gun Corps within that Regiment. He was promoted to Lance Corporal and Sergeant and served in Egypt. He was awarded the Victory, British and 15 Star Medals and the Silver War Badge, which would have been awarded as a result of being wounded and honourably discharged from the Army.
The 1939 Register records Fred as living in Holme Church Lane and being “incapacitated” and in receipt of a pension as an ex-service man. His son Fred was also living at that that address and was employed as a booking clerk in the ship building industry.
Fred died in 1958 aged 80. His wife died in 1932.
