The eighth of the 10 children of Charles Marshall Horner and his wife Elizabeth, and their third son, George Horner was born in Beverley the 27 Sep 1880. The family lived in Lairgate. After completing his education George worked as a tanner's labourer until he joined the Army. He married Nellie Beatrice Hall, the daughter of James and Rosannah Hall of Skidby on 17 Jul 1907. They had four children, George Herbert born 9 Jan 1908, James William born 16 Oct 1909, Ethel born 25 Jun 1911 and Francis born 4 Oct 1915. They lived at 4 Sloe Lane, Beverley,
George signed his attestation form on 10 Dec 1915 and joined the Army Reserve. He was mobilised on 2 Jun 1916 and joined the East Yorkshire Regiment. Subsequently he was transferred to the 14th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment and was sent to Etaples, France on 15 Oct 1916 to join the Battalion. They moved into billets at Thievres the next day. By Jun 1917 the Battalion had been in the field for some time. Towards the end of the month they were involved in an attack on enemy positions resulting in the capture of part of the enemy front line. The Battalion's new positions were continually shelled from 11am to 9pm on 1 July. The Regimental Diary for that day gives the casualties as eight killed and 11 wounded. Private Horner was one of those casualties, his Army Service Record states that he was killed in action on 2 Jul 1917.
Private Horner is buried at the Arras Memorial at Faubourg D'Amiens, Arras, France.
