John was the eldest son of John William Hunt of Newport and his wife Jane (nee Stephenson) of Flambrough. He was born in Bridlington in 1892. In 1911 his parents lived in Swinemoor Lane, Beverley, his father was employed at the shipyard. John, aged 18, was employed by Cyril Smith at Thearne as a farm labourer.

In August 1911 he enlisted in the Regular Army, joining the Royal Regiment of Artillery. Attached to the 4th Battalion, in Mar 1913, he embarked for India where he served throughout the war until he was demobilised in Jul 1919. Before embarkation to India, he was examined by a Board of Officers for the purpose of examining and reporting upon his fitness for appointment as a Shoeing Smith in the RFA. His service record shows he was not a Shoeing Smith until Jun 1915, by Apr 1916 he had been promoted to Shoeing Smith Corporal. He was awarded a Silver War Badge and he returned to England in Jun 1919. He was discharged on 6 Jul 1919.

On 22 May 1920 John married Charlotte Ellen Senior in St Nicholas Church, Beverley. Charlotte was a widow whose first husband was killed in action in Oct 1914. Her maiden name was Gray. Charlotte died in 1937 at the age of 46, and in the 1939 Register John is shown as widowed, living alone, working as a tannery maintenance worker, and also serving as an East Riding Special Constable. John died in 1949 in Holderness, Yorkshire.
