Thomas Hunsley was born on 14 Nov 1885 in Beverley and baptised at St Mary's Church, Beverley, on 27 Dec 1885, the son of Robert and Louisa Hunsley of 43 Norwood Grove, Beverley and had 5 brothers John Henry, Walter Belcher, Robert, Frank and George and 3 sisters Charlotte Elizabeth, Clara Louisa and Ada. He attended St Mary's Boys' School in Beverley and on leaving school was apprenticed as a joiner. In the 1911 census he is shown as carpenter with the North Eastern Railway.
Thomas joined the 2nd Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment (83rd Brigade 28th Division) and served in the Balkans. He was reported missing in action on the 16 Nov 1916 and has no known grave, but is commemorated at the Doiran Memorial in Greece. The memorial is the Battle Memorial of the British Salonika Force.
Thomas was awarded the Victory Medal and British War Medal. Two of his brothers, Frank and Robert were also killed in action. His eldest brother, Harry (John Henry) was an air mechanic attached to the Naval Air Service, whilst Walter worked in munitions in Hull and his youngest brother, George was with the Royal Irish Fusiliers.
