William Hughes was born in Hull in 1893, the son of Charles William Hughes and Sarah Jane Hughes (nee Leigh). He was baptized at St Andrews Church Drypool on 6 Sep 1893 along with two of his brothers and sister. Charles his father was a boiler maker, born in Scotland. In 1911 William lived with his father and 2 siblings in Beverley. His mother died in 1899. William was an apprentice picture framer.
William enlisted with the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment on 9 Sep 1914. He served in France and in 1918 was awarded the Silver war medal due to sickness and returned to Beverley to work in the ship building industry. He was also awarded the 14/15 clasp, the British medal and the victory medal.
In 1918 he returned to live with his sister Margaret Jane Forrest in Beverley.
