Description | Work completed by volunteer includes the following information:
Percy was Francis and Sarah Ann Hood's youngest son. He was born in Beverley in 1899 and unlike his four elder brothers already serving, he was attached to 9th Northumberland Fusiliers having initially joined the Training Reserve in Apr 1917 when he was 18. The Northumberland Fusiliers saw considerable action throughout the war.
A report appeared in The Beverley Guardian in Mar 1919 with photographs of the 5 Hood brothers reporting that 19 year old Percy had been severely wounded in the stomach on 1 Nov 1918 but was recovering. The family were told that Percy had been left for dead on the battle field but had managed to crawl back over 2 miles to safety under the cover of darkness. He was then in hospital for more than a year. Percy was awarded the Silver Badge together with the Victory and British medals.
In December 1922 Percy married Annie Eliza Wiles of Beverley. They raised a family in and around Walkington. Percy was buried at Walkington Churchyard on 1 Dec 1967.
