Description | Work completed by volunteer includes the following information:
Albert, known as Ernest was the fourth son of Francis and Sarah Ann Hood. He was born in Beverley in 1896 and baptized together with his elder brother Alfred in Beverley Minster on 12 Mar 1897. The family lived in Queensgate and Ernest's name appears on the Schools' Admission Record for Woodmansey School.
Ernest's Medal Index Card shows he joined the Royal Field Artillery and was entitled to the Victory and British medals. Ernest must also have served with the Royal Horse Artillery as this was reported in the London Gazette on 9 Dec 1916 when he was awarded the Military Medal. Ernest was a Bombardier. It's noted on his Medal Index card and Medal Roll that on 30 Nov 1917 Ernest asked to revert to a Gunner. No explanation is given.
In Mar 1919 an article and photographs appeared in the Beverley Guardian telling of the five Hood brothers who served and recording that Ernest had been twice wounded as had brothers Jack and Percy. Alfred was killed in 1918.
After the war Ernest returned to his family now living in Walkington and married Elsie Alice Castle of Beverley at Beverley Minster in 1927. On his marriage entry Ernest was living at Wood Cottage, Bentley and he was a quarryman. At the time of his death in 1955, Ernest aged 59, was living at The Retreat, Butt Lane, Beverley. He is buried in Queensgate Cemetery where his brothers William, John and Alfred can also be found.
