John William Holliday was born the 6 Jan 1893, the second of four children to William, a tanner, and Elizabeth Ann Nevison Holliday, nee Taylor, of Flemingate. In 1911 John was a cow man on George Sellers' farm at Arram and on 7 Sep1914 he enlisted in the 5th Battalion Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own Yorkshire Regiment, or the Beverley Terriers. Sometime during 1915 John was wounded, though how, when or where is not recorded and, on 25 May 1916, he was discharged with a Silver Badge. He was also awarded the Victory Medal, the British Medal and the 15 Star for his part in the war and is listed on the Beckside and Flemingate Roll of Honour.

John passed away on 26 Feb 1942 in Raywell, aged 49.
