William Hoggard was born in Beverley to the late William Hoggard a cow keeper of Keldgate Beverley.

William joined up in Manchester on the 9 Jan 1901, aged 18, his occupation listed as a moulder. He lived in the army barracks in Lancaster in 1901 before being in hospital with tonsillitis. In 1911 he is listed as living with his sister Fanny Heppenstall, his occupation a cotton operative. William married Hannah Heppenstall, stepdaughter of Fanny Heppenstall, on 5 Aug 1914 at Oldham. William was in the 1st Battalion, Kings own Royal Lancaster Regiment. He received a Distinguished Conduct Medal in Dec 1914 for his bravery in the trenches. He was killed in action in La Bassee on 7 Jan 1915. He is remembered with Honour at Trancrez Farm Cemetery
