William was born in Beverley Nov 1893, the son of Alfred Thomas and Margaret Hodges. His father was a soldier based at the Victoria Barracks, but his mother died very soon after William was born, and he was raised by his maternal grandparents, William and Mary Atkins. His grandfather was a foreman at the Tanyard. In the 1911 Census, aged 16, William was living with his grandparents at 6 Long Lane, employed as a tanner’s labourer, and in 1914 he married Violet Maud Hatfield in Beverley Minster

Information regarding William’s service is given in the Beverley Guardian, 4 Aug 1917 has a photograph stating he was a Private in the East Yorkshire Regiment and a report that he had been “wounded in the left arm on 20th July and is now in hospital in France.”. The issue of the 5 Oct 1918 states that “W. A. Hodges of the East Yorkshire Regiment was wounded in the head on September 17th and is now in hospital in Leicester. This is the third time he has been wounded.”

After the war William returned to his employment as a tanner’s labourer and living at 9 Sloe Lane, Beverley. William and Violet had four children, Winifred Mary born 1919, Elsie born 1920, Mabel Joan born 1922 and William Alfred born 1924. In 1939 William and Violet lived at Bunkers Hill, Aldbrough, and he was employed as a general labourer/drainage. Violet died aged 56 in 1950 and William died aged 73 in Jun 1967.
