Frank Hall was born in Bishop Burton in 1897. He was one of six children born to Charles Hall, an agricultural labourer, and his wife Helen. Charles was born in Market Weighton whilst Helen was from Bishop Burton. By the time of the 1911 census the family had moved to Beverley and was living at 3 Eastgate. Charles was a farm worker as was Frank’s older brother, Robert, born in 1885. Frank was unmarried.
Frank served as a private in the 2nd/5th Battalion of the Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding) Regiment, part of 186th Brigade and 62nd (West Riding) Division. He enlisted in Beverley. On 3 May 1917 Frank was reported as missing in action, his body was never recovered. He is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. He was awarded the War and Victory Medals.
Frank was killed during the Battle of Arras in France that had commenced in Apr 1917. The target for the West Riding Regiment on 3 May was the village of Bullecourt. The war diary of the 2/5th notes that 2 men were killed, 275 wounded and 123 were missing on the day though some of them returned the next day. Frank was one of those reported missing who did not return. The circumstances of his death are unknown.
Frank is commemorated on the Hengate War Memorial in Beverley and also on the East Riding Memorial in Beverley Minster.
