The Beverley Guardian 18 Sep 1915, published photographs of Albert Edward along with three of his brothers, George William, Cornelius and Ernest Richard, all serving in the war, together with a photograph of their father, George Hawes. His eldest brother, John James Henry, also later enlisted.

Albert's medal record card shows he served with the Durham Light Infantry and embarked for France in Apr 1915. By Sep 1915, when the photograph was published, he had been wounded, and was subsequently transferred to the Labour Corps where he continued to serve until his discharge in May, 1919. He was awarded the British War and Victory Medals and the 15 Star.

Albert was born 17 May 1887 in Etton, the third of five surviving sons born to George and Emma Hawes. In Oct 1892 he attended Bishop Burton school along with his sister, Edith Annie, and one of his older brothers, George William. The 1901 census shows him, aged 13, employed as an ordinary farm labourer living in Holme on Spalding Moor. In 1907, at the age of 20, he married Christiana Turner in Bishop Burton. Christiana was born in Owstwick, daughter of David and Martha Turner. They had at least two children, James Edward and Christiana. In 1911 he was living in Bishop Burton, employed as a general labourer, and the 1939 Register shows Albert and his wife, Christiana, living in Kirk Ella, where Albert was a landscape gardener.
Albert died in 1970 in Birmingham.
