Description | Work completed by volunteer includes the following information:
On 18 Sep 1915 the Beverley Guardian published a photograph of Mr. George Hawes, a gardener at Bishop Burton Hall for 27 years, and four of his sons, all of whom were serving soldiers.
George’s eldest son, John James Henry whose photograph was not published, also served, in the Royal Army Medical Corps. Ernest who was the youngest was killed in action in Aug 1915. All the others survived the war.
George was born in 1848 in Norfolk but by the time he was three years old the family had moved to Hull Bridge Road, Tickton, and by the time he was 13 they were living in Well Lane, Beverley and George was shown on the census return as employed as an errand boy.
The 1871 census shows him married, with wife Elizabeth and daughter Margaret Jane, born in Beverley. Information about Elizabeth has not been found but in 1875 George had been widowed and he married Emma Clayton in Thirsk; his occupation was given as a groom. They later lived in Etton, Cherry Burton and Bishop Burton. The 1911 census shows them living in Bishop Burton and states that of the 13 children they had together only six were still alive.
In 1939, George was back living at Hull Bridge, Tickton
George died, aged 92 in Sep 1940
