John, known as Jack was born the 8 Sep 1877 and baptized on 5 May 1878 in Brough. He was son of Sarah Ellen Haldenby and was brought up by his grandparents Joseph and Alice Haldenby in Elloughton. Sarah married Charles Firman on 10 May 1903 aged 40. They lived at 18 Sylvester Lane, Beverley. Jack married Mary Jane Drewery on 2 Sep 1908 in Elloughton. He was a builder’s labourer.

On 28 Nov 1916 Jack was serving as a deckhand on HMT Pelagia when it was struck by mine off Nab Head in the Solent. The trawler went down with no survivors. Jack was aged 39.

His wife did not remarry and died in Beverley in 1930. She was buried at New Walk Cemetery, Beverley on 8 Oct 1930.

Jack is remembered on the war memorial at Brough and on Chatham Naval Memorial.
