Charles Harvatt was born the 26 Aug 1888 in South Dalton, to John and Mary/May Harvatt. Charles was one of 10 children all born in South Dalton, of which one had died prior to 1911. John was listed as being a groom in the 1901 census. On 29 Jun 1893 Charles was admitted to the Dalton Holme school. He married Ethel Russell on 4 Jul 1908 at St Judes Church, Hull at which time his occupation is listed as a labourer. Charles and Ethel appear to have had four children, Charles Henry born 1909, Lillian born 1910 and died 1913, John E born 1912 and Winifred born 1917 all in Beverley. Green's Almanack and the Beverley Guardian newspaper provide information that Charles was wounded in the right thigh on 14 Sep 1916 on the Somme, and was in Newcastle Hospital on 30 September. Charles died at Hull Royal Infirmary in 1922 and was buried in Queensgate Cemetery, Beverley on 10 Oct 1922.
