Henry was born in Beverley on 7 Jan 1887 and baptized at St Mary’s church on New Year’s Day 1888. He was one of three sons born to Gibson and Rebekah Hall (nee Elvidge). His parents were publicans at the Fleece Inn on Beckside Beverley. His father Gibson accidently drowned in 1901.

Henry followed his older brother into work at the Post Office, joining in Driffield in Mar 1911. On 29 June 1912 Henry married Annie Boyes at Beverley Minster. They had two children, Jack born in 1912 and Harold born in 1915. By the time of the war the family lived in Regent street, Beverley.

Henry joined the Territorial force in 1912. he served as a private in the East Yorkshire regiment and later transferred to the 35th Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers having been seriously injured with a gunshot when serving abroad. On 17 Jul 1918 he was discharged from the army and was awarded a silver war badge. He was also awarded the Victory medal and British War medal.

Henry died at home on 12 Oct 1920 and was buried in an official war grave in Queensgate cemetery, Beverley
