TitleResearch file number 860 relating to Herbert Hunt (1897-1950)
Date2018
DescriptionWork completed by volunteer includes the following information

Herbert was born in Beverley on 20 Jul 1897. He was one of ten children born to Tom Hunt and his wife Ann Elizabeth (nee Berridge). The family lived at 11 Railway Terrace, Beverley, an address later referred to as 38 Trinity Lane. Little is known of Herbert's life before the War.

Not a great deal is known of Herbert's military service in the war as most of his documents are missing. He joined the 5th Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment as a private and saw service in France and Belgium. Alongside him was his older brother Harry Hunt who served for a time with the 5th but was later captured and became a POW. Herbert joined the regular 1st Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment later in the war. They were stationed in India and it seems that Herbert was sent to serve with them during the 3rd Anglo-Afghan War of 1919 on the North West Frontier. For this service he was awarded the India General Service Medal with the Afghanistan/North West Frontier clasp. He was also awarded the War and Victory Medals.

After the war Herbert worked as a grocer's lorry driver. On 2 Apr 1934 he was married at Beverley Minster, Ethel Turnbull, born locally in 1899, daughter of a miller. She had worked at the Beverley laundry. They had three children, the first, Neville, born in 1935. They lived on Albert Terrace in Beverley. Herbert died at the age of 52 in the summer of 1950 and was buried at Queensgate Cemetery on 18 August of that year. Ethel died in 1954 and was also buried there.
