Benjamin Gillyon was born 9 Oct 1885 and was baptized the 10 Oct 1885 at St Mary’s Church, Beverley. He was one of 14 children born to Benjamin, a waterman and Ann Gillyon

In Mar 1896 aged 12, Benjamin was charged, along with 3 other friends with breaking 43 panes of glass and a wash basin by throwing stones at the premises of Whiting Manufacturer. The parents of the three boys were each fined 5 shillings 6 pence each. Benjamin married Jane Shaw on the 7 Nov 1907 at St Paul’s, Sculcoates. At the time of the 1911 census he was listed as a waterman and captain of a canal boat dealing in the coal trade. Benjamin and Jane had 5 children one of whom died prior to the 1911 census, Benjamin born 1910, Henry born and died 1912, Albert born 1914 and Isabella 1917, seven months after her father’s death.

Benjamin enlisted as a private in the 1st Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment on 6 Feb 1915. He was killed in action in France on 14 Jul 1916. He is commemorated at Thiepval, France. He was awarded the three war medals, British, Victory and 15 Star
