Arthur (Albert) William Gray born in Apr 1898 was the sixth son of Charles and Alice Gray who lived in Holme Church Lane, Beverley. His father Charles was born in Beverley and mother Alice who bore 9 children was born in Bubwith.
Alice died in 1910 leaving 9 children ranging in age from 23 years to 1 year, the family had moved by this time to Woodland Villas, Beaver Road and was looked after by a 19 year old niece called Tilly Houghton. Arthur and his brothers Edward and Joseph all served in the war. Arthur who was at school on the 1911 census enlisted into the Army Service Corp. His photograph appears in the Beverley Guardian in Sep 1916 stating that he was serving in Egypt.
Arthur survived the war, he never married. By 1939 he was employed as a tanner’s labourer living with his brother James and family at 21 Holme Church Lane, Beverley.
Arthur died in 1967 and was buried at Queensgate cemetery on 26 Jan 1967.
