Born in Beverley in 1898, Charles Thomas Goforth was the first child and eldest son of Sarah Ann Goforth who subsequently married Fred Robinson and became Sarah Ann Robinson. Fred Robinson was employed as a tanner's labourer. The family lived at various addresses in Beverley including Lurk Lane in 1901 and 115 Keldgate in 1911. At the time of Charles' enlistment in the Army the family was living at 104 Keldgate. In civilian life Charles was a farm labourer.
Charles Goforth attested on 2 Mar 1916 and was called up on 5 Jan 1917. After preliminary training in England with the 81st Training Reserve Battalion he was transferred to the Durham Light Infantry, initially to the 22nd Battalion and later to the 18th Battalion. Private Goforth was sent to France on 30 May 1917, disembarking at Boulogne he was then sent on to Etaples on 31 May 1917. He was missing, presumed killed in action on 28 Mar 1918.
Private Goforth is commemorated at the Arras Memorial in France and on the Beverley War memorial. He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
