John William Green was born in Skirlaugh in 1889, his father was an agricultural labourer, born in Beeford. The family moved around the East Riding working on different farms until they settled in Catfoss. John’s mother Harriet died in 1894 when he was just 5 years old leaving his father with 3 boys, Henry, John and George. He remarried in 1896 and further children were born Alice, Hilda, Lucy, Annie Thomas and Clara. Not all of the children survived to adulthood.
John joined the 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, part of Kitchener’s new army in 1915, the battalion formed part of the 50th Brigade, 17th Northern Division. By the time of his death on 8 Jul 1916 he had been in France for just over a year and the division was engaged in the first battles of the Somme offensive. He was awarded the Victory Medal, British War Medal and 1915 Star and is buried at the Gordon Dump Cemetery, Ovillers-La Boiselle, France.
He is also commemorated on the Roll of Honour in St Lawrence Church Sigglesthorne to the men of Sigglesthorne, Seaton Wassand and Catfoss who gave their lives in the Great War.
