Joseph Gray born on 30 Mar 1891 was the twin brother of Charles Gray, sons of Charles and Alice Gray who lived on Holme Church Lane, Beverley. The twins Joseph and Charles had an older brother James and younger brothers and sisters. Two of his brothers Edward and Arthur also served in the war. On the 1911 census Joseph is aged 20 and working as a ship builder’s mate.
Joseph joined the Northumberland Fusiliers, a photograph was in the Beverley Guardian in Sep 1916 with the caption of‘missing’. No further details have been discovered but he survived the war.
The 1939 register shows him living with the Hough family on Thompson Avenue, Beverley. He was employed as a night watchman at the shipyard. He was unmarried.
He died in 1961 aged 70 years. He was buried in Queensgate Cemetery, Beverley on 5 July 1961.
