Sergeant Thomas Grant`s photograph appears in Greens Almanac under the Roll of Honour for 1915. He was born in Walkington in Oct 1892 and in 1911 was living with his parents John and Mary Grant at Walkington Hall where both he and his father were employed as gardeners. His father John Grant was born in Willerby, and married a Walkington girl, Elizabeth Oliver in 1864. They had 8 children. Elizabeth died in 1889 and John married Mary in 1890. John and Mary subsequently had 3 children Kathleen, James and Thomas Geoffrey. Both John and Mary died towards the end of WW1 and they are buried next to each other in Walkington churchyard.
Thomas is recorded in the Beverley Guardian in Jan 1915 as being with his cousin Sgt T Oliver when Sgt Oliver died of wounds, following the Battle of Givenchy on Christmas day 1914. To have been the rank of sergeant in Dec 1914 suggests that he may have been a regular soldier before the outbreak of war. His cousin who died at the Battle of Givenchy had been a regular soldier and was in the police force when war broke out when he was recalled to his regiment. Thomas may have joined the Guards because of this family precedence.
Thomas survived the war and died in Worthing, Sussex in 1972
