Henry Gleadhill was born in Beverley the 31 May 1892 and was baptised at Beverley Minster on 6 Jul 1892. His father James Henry Gleadhill was a chalk pit labourer; his mother was Elizabeth Gleadhill (nee Hardy),they married in Beverley in 1882. Henry was one of six sons, only Robert Edgar, did not serve in the army during the war. The family lived at Grosvenor Place, off Cartwright Lane and then moved to 13 Sloe Lane. Henry is recorded in the 1911 census as a “dental mechanic”

Henry enlisted at Beverley on 24 Sep 1914 and was initially in the TA. He joined the 1st/3rd Northumbrian Field Ambulance raised in Hull which served with 50th (Northumbrian) Division. Henry arrived in France on 20 Apr 1915. His brother, Wilfred was also in the Northumbrian Field Ambulance and arrived the same day. Henry’s military records are damaged and only partially legible, he spent much of the war attached to the Etaples Camp as a dental technician. He later served in Marseilles. He had three spells in hospital, notably for appendicitis from Oct 1915 to Mar 1916. Despite being classified upon leaving the army in July 1919 as a “very good” soldier he had had some issues with discipline and his records show 4 days Field Punishment No.2 for “insolence to a warrant officer” and for “conduct prejudicial to good order and military discipline.”

After the war Henry returned to Beverley and continued as a dental technician. He lived in Cherry Burton for a time. He married Lucy Atkinson in Beverley in 1921 and they had two children: Audrey, born 1921 and James born 1928. They moved to Hull and in the 1939 Register were living at 56 De La Pole Avenue. Henry died in 1962 aged 69. His wife had died in 1949

Two of Henry’s brothers died during the war: James on 3 Oct 1918 and Leonard on the Somme 23 Jul 1916. William a Beverley postman, was injured in 1917
