Joseph was born in Beverley the 27 Dec 1889 and was baptized at St John’s Catholic church the 5 Jan 1890, he was one of 7 children born to Neil and Mary Ann Gallagher (nee Lyons). His father was a tanner’s labourer born in Ireland. The family lived in Sweeps Row, Keldgate, Beverley.
Joseph served in the 2nd Battalion, Manchester Regiment and was wounded at La Bessee. On 15 Jan 1915 his photo in the Beverley Guardian shows him at Brocklesby Hall, Lincolnshire. It is also reported that his brother Neil had been killed on 11 Jan. Joseph was discharged from the army in 1917 due to sickness and was awarded the Silver badge, he was also awarded the 15 Star, Victory and British medals.
Joseph married Elsie E Fleetham at Sculcoates Registry Office in 1917, he died 16 Apr 1929 aged 39. He was buried the 20 April at Hedon Road Cemetery, Hull.
