Description | Work completed by volunteer includes the following information:
Arthur Fenton was born 1895, the eldest child of George and Kate Fenton of Lockington. Arthur had eight siblings Harold, Mary, Edith, Elsie May, David, Annie, George and William. In 1911 Arthur was a horseman at Lockington Grange but on 27 Feb 1915, just four months after the outbreak of war, Arthur enlisted in the Army Service Corp as a driver. Unfortunately Arthur's service was to be a short one and he would never leave home to see action at the front.
On the 25 Aug 1915, during training at Orkney Farm Camp in Hampshire, Arthur was taken to the military hospital at Frencham Hill where he passed away the same day. The cause of death was ulceration of the stomach, according to his service record, though his death certificate gives the cause as shock from strangulation of the bowel.
Arthur's remains were taken back to Lockington where he was interred with full military honours on 30 Aug 1915. Arthur was 20 years old and is remembered on the Lockington War Memorial and the Beverley Minster Memorial.
In 1917 Harold, Arthur's younger brother, enlisted in the Essex Regiment, but was invalided out and transferred to the Labour Corp in 1918. Harold served in Egypt and also on the home front. He was awarded the British and Victory Medals
