George Ford was born in 1884 the of John Ford and his wife Margaret, formerly Duffil, of Friars Lane, Beverley. He had a brother John William, and two older sisters, Ada and Florence. George's father was working as a painter in 1881 but died in 1885. The following year his mother married John Jude, originally from Garveston, Norfolk. His mother's second marriage gave George eight step-siblings, he subsequently acquired five half-siblings Amy, Robert, Matthew, Tom and Ada Jude.

George joined the Army on 2 Apr 1901 and was posted to the Royal Garrison Artillery with the rank of Gunner. He had been living with his step-brother, John William Jude, and his family in Hull. George worked as a labourer and was a member of the Second East Yorkshire Volunteers. During his Army career he served in Malta for two years and in India for four years. He was transferred to the Army Reserve on 1 Apr 1909 and discharged on completing his 12 year term on 1 Apr 1913.

He re-enlisted on 4 Apr 1916 rejoining the Royal Garrison Artillery as a Gunner. The only record of his First World War Army service that survives is his Medal Index Cards. He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

In 1938 George married Stella Slack, formerly Godfrey, of Bradford. She had three children and had previously been married to Ernest A Slack. The 1939 Register showed the Ford family living in Withernsea, George was then working as a porter at the Poor Law Institute. George Ford died in 1958 aged 74.
