Description | Work completed by volunteer includes the following information Frederick William Franklin (often referred to as “Charlie”) was born in Beverley on 1 May 1899. He was one of nine children born to Frederick Franklin and Hannah Elizabeth Franklin (nee Castle). Frederick was brought up at Providence Row, later 11 Wilbert Terrace. Nothing is known of his life before the war.
Frederick served in the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) as did his two older brothers. It is likely that Frederick enlisted in late 1915 or in 1916. He was wounded and discharged from the army as unfit for further service in May 1919 and awarded the Silver Badge. He was also awarded the War and Victory Medals.
After the war Frederick moved to West Yorkshire. He married Minnie Marshall, born 1902 in Nottinghamshire on 30 Jun 1916 at St Mark’s Church at Woodhouse in Leeds. Minnie was living in Harrogate at the time the daughter of a grocer, Frederick occupation was listed as a butler. They had a son Ronald born 1927. They later moved to Bradford where in 1939 Frederick was recorded as being the “caretaker and secretary of a medical consultation chamber” in the city. The family later lived at Guiseley where on 18 June 1976, at the age of 79 Frederick died. Minnie died in 1966 aged 63.
