Description | Work completed by volunteer includes the following information
Thomas Futty was born in Beverley the 9 Apr 1877 and was baptised at Beverley Minster, not far from where his family lived in Minster Moorgate, on 23 Sep 1877. Thomas was the only son of Henry and Hannah Futty. Henry was originally from Withernsea and worked as a farm labourer and a rulleyman. Hannah (nee Foster) was from Beverley. Thomas had two sisters, Harriett and Mary Ann, and a half sister Emily. He worked as a tanner’s labourer at Hodgson and Son’s tannery in Beverley. On 1 Nov 1902 he married Maria Burton at Beverley Minster. Maria was born in 1877. They had four children before the war, the first, Henry was born in 1904. The family lived at 41 Minster Moorgate.
Thomas joined the 13th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment as private 13/850 which suggests that he may have been amongst the earlier recruits when this 4th Hull Pals Battalion (popularly referred to as “T’Others) was raised in the city. His medal records show he did not go with them to Egypt in late 1915 as he was not awarded the 1914-1915 Star. He rose to the rank of corporal though his photo in the Beverley Guardian on 10 Feb 1917 describes Thomas as being a sergeant. He later served with the 6th Battalion of the East Yorkshires. Thomas was awarded the War and Victory Medals.
After the war Thomas continued to do labouring work, in the 1939 Register he was described as being a builder’s labourer. He and his wife had eight children. Thomas died in 1951 at the age of 74; Maria died in 1945.
