DescriptionWork completed by volunteer includes the following information

George Foster was born in Woodmansey the 13 Jan 1896 and was baptised along with his younger brother Fred, at St Nicholas’ Church, Beverley the 10 Nov 1907. George was one of six children born to Robert Foster of North Frodingham and Elizabeth Bewell of Harpham who married at Beverley Minster in 1883. Robert was originally a shoemaker but on moving to Beverley became a tanner’s labourer. George was brought up on Cherry Tree Lane and later at 97 Grovehill Road. Like two of his sisters George worked as a bobbin spinner at a Beverley ropery before the war.

George was pictured in the Beverley Guardian in Jul 1916 whilst under training with the East Riding Yeomanry. The accompanying description said that he was a lance corporal but this is not corroborated in surviving military documents. George was awarded the War and Victory medals.

George married Annie Ford of Keldgate, born 1902 at Beverley Minster the 18 Jul 1920. They had three children. In the 1939 Register they were recorded living at 19 Thompson Avenue. George was by then working in a gelatine works, possibly that attached to Hodgson and Sons’ Tannery.

George died in Jul 1976 and was buried at Queensgate Cemetery on 28 July, Annie died in 1955.

George is remembered on the Grovehill Street Shrine, along with his brother Cyril.
