Description | Work completed by volunteer includes the following information:
Eric was born 23 May 1896, the youngest of four children born to George and Rachel Fisher. He became a market gardener. Eric joined the Army on 19 Oct 1914, enlisting in the East Yorkshire Regiment and trained as a Machine Gunner. The 2 Dec issue of the Beverley Guardian tells us that he is at the Front. The 23 Jun issue reports he had been wounded and as a consequence of that he had to have his leg amputated, and was in a hospital in Brighton. This was the Brighton Pavilion Hospital for amputees. Eric was very fortunate to get to that particular hospital because as well as fitting prosthetics, they encouraged the men to learn new skills to obtain work after the war. This was done in the Queen Mary Workshop next to the hospital.
He married Jessie Harker Hunt on 29 May 1918 at St Nicholas Church, Beverley. He was listed as a boot maker. Eric and Jessie had four children, George W born 1922, Olive B born 1924, Thomas born 1927, and Olga M born 1932.
Eric died on 29 Sep 1977 and was buried in Queensgate Cemetery on 4 Oct 1977, he is buried with his wife who died eleven years earlier.
