Private George Ballinger Fisher, Northumberland Fusiliers of Beckside, Beverley died of wounds on 7 Nov 1916 during the final stages of the Battles of the Somme in the Battle of Ancre Heights.
George was one of a family of eight who lived on Beckside, Beverley. His father was a self employed market gardener and a Wesleyan lay preacher. Just prior to war being declared George married Ethel Drinkwater in Bolton, Lancashire.
He joined the Northumberland Fusiliers and served in the 20th Battalion (Tyneside Scottish) as part of the 102nd Brigade, 34th Division. The 20 Battalion was formed in Newcastle in Nov 1914 and went to France in Jan 1916. Georges regiment was involved in the Battles of the Somme in Nov 1916 and he is buried in plot IC 4 in the Trois Arbes Cemetery, Steenwerk, France. The cemetery was the site of the Australian clearing station and field hospital until Apr 1918 when it was captured by the Germans following a rearguard action by the 34th Division. It is probable that he was taken to this field hospital, dying of his wounds before being buried in the plot used by the hospital. Following his death his war gratuity of £3 was sent to his widow
