Frederick was born 6 Nov1880 in Sutton, Hull the eldest of ten children born to Samuel Fairfield and his wife Matilda
In 1897 he enlisted in the East Yorkshire Regiment and was stationed in England and Ireland until March 1900 when he sailed on SS Nile to South Africa and took part in the South African campaigns of 1900, 1901 and 1902, attaining the rank of Corporal. He was discharged, at his own request, in Oct1902.
In civilian life Frederick was employed as a ships painter in Beverley and married Ellen Hulland of Beverley in 1906, they had five children
In 1913 he enlisted in the Territorial Force of the Yorkshire Regiment. On 5 Aug 1914 he was transferred to the Royal Engineers Signals Section, promoted to Lance Corporal then to Second Corporal in Apr 1915. He embarked to France with the Expeditionary Force on 17 Apr 1915 and took part in the Battle at Ypres. On 10 May 1915 he was admitted to Havre General Hospital, having received a shrapnel wound to the head, and later transferred to Manchester hospital, then to the VAD hospital in Clitheroe where he remained until Aug 1915. Frederick remained in England until he was eventually demobilised on 31 Mar 1920. During this time he was further promoted to Corporal, then Sergeant, then CSM and finally became a Drill Instructor in 1919. On 15 Feb 1921 Frederick enlisted in the Territorial Force of the Green Howards, holding the rank of Sergeant
Frederick died in Beverley at the age of 73 on 17 May, 1954, and was buried in St. Mary's Burial Ground, New Walk, Beverley
